Press Ombudsman, Ireland

The Office of the Press Ombudsman provides an independent press complaints mechanism that is quick, fair and free. It considers complaints about newspapers (print and online), magazines and online-only news publications. The office is independent of government and the press. All national newspapers (including Irish editions of UK newspapers), most local newspapers, many magazines and some online-only news publications are members. Members commit to the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland, which sets out the highest professional and ethical standards for their journalists. Complaints can be considered about articles and journalists’ behaviour, and the office offers conciliation and mediation services to complainants and publishers. If complaints cannot be resolved through this process the Press Ombudsman makes a formal decision on the complaint and if the complaint is upheld it must be published in full, without editorial comment and with due prominence by the member publications.
