The Consumer Council

Our principal statutory duty is to promote and safeguard the interests of consumers in Northern Ireland. We have specific statutory duties in relation to energy, postal services, transport, and water and sewerage. These include considering consumer complaints and enquiries, carrying out research and educating and informing consumers.

The Dispute Service Ltd

Is an independent, not-for-profit company established in 2003 to resolve tenancy deposit disputes arising in the private rented sector speedily, cost-effectively and fairly. It operates an insurance-backed Tenancy Deposit Scheme under a service concession agreement with the Department for Communities and Local Government. In addition to being awarded the Government's Customer Service Excellence Award, it was voted the best tenancy deposit scheme at the Property Drum B2B Awards in 2012. Its adjudicators are members of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. It provides key services to SafeDeposits Scotland and is the parent company of TDS Northern Ireland.

The Pensions Ombudsman

Considers complaints of maladministration by, and disputes of fact or law with, trustees, managers, employers and administrators in relation to pension schemes. Schemes can be "occupational" (i.e. established by an employer), or "personal" (set up by an individual for themselves), and his jurisdiction includes "stakeholder" pensions. In some circumstances he can investigate complaints made by trustees, managers or employers against similar bodies. Complainants should first seek the help of The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS)- tel. 0300 123 1047.
