Gabriel Scally, hailing from Belfast, serves as President of the Epidemiology and Public Health section at the Royal Society of Medicine and chairs the Soil Association. He pursued medicine at The Queen’s University of Belfast, specializing in general practice and later public health. Notably, from 1989 to 1993, he held the position of Chief Administrative Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for the Eastern Health and Social Services Board in Northern Ireland. Transitioning to England, he served as Regional Director of Public Health until 2012, addressing significant clinical service failures such as breast screening in Exeter and pathology in Swindon.
Dr. Scally's expertise extends to advising inquiries, including the Northern Ireland Inquiry into Hyponatraemia Related Death. Presently, he holds visiting professorships at the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol, and jointly leads a Wellcome Trust-funded research project on health considerations in urban planning.
